STEM CERTIFICATION

February 27, 2020

Dear Addison Parents and Guardians,

It is with great excitement that I am letting you know that Addison Elementary is officially Cobb STEM Certified! Today the STEM committee from the county came and walked our school to see all our students in their classrooms, and in Art, PE and Music and the Learning Commons participating in STEM activities that integrated Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. The committee was amazed by our students and their ability to demonstrate the 4 C’s of collaboration, communication, critical thinking and creativity. Students were engaged, working together and learning so much from the challenges that were put before them. We are so proud of all the hard work and determination demonstrated by our students and our staff. This has been a three-year journey and it is exciting to say we are a Cobb STEM Certified School.

Week of January 27th

Hello Parents! I hope you all had a wonderful weekend!

What will your child be learning this week?

Math: We are continuing to practice addition and subtraction strategies. This week we will practice with three-digit numbers. Depending on where they are, students will work with no regrouping, regrouping, subtraction, numbers to 1,000, and word problems.

Reading/Language Arts: We are continuing to practice making predictions before, during, and after reading and making inferences from text. We will also continue to practice with adjectives and adverbs and determining the difference between the two.

Writing: We will begin opinion writing as we were not able to begin this last week due to many Learning Commons visits! The students will be required to include an introduction (hook), state an opinion, provide several reasons with examples, and a closing.

Science: We are discussing changes in the moon. The students will be required to describe, illustrate, and predict moon changes over time. I will send a moon calendar for those students wanting to observe the moon each night. They are not required to actually "name" the moon phases, but I will be discussing the names in class.
