Week of August 28

It is hard to believe we are already in the fifth week of school! So much to do and so little time!

What Is Your Child Learning This Week?
In Math, we will continue learning about Place Value, including what is a ten, what is a one, how do I determine the value of each, counting out tens and ones, etc. I have added some place value/tens and ones videos to the "Parent Resources" section if you would like to check them out. Also, there are links to games in the math section of the blog. Also, many of the students are not yet able to count to 120 consistently. Please practice with your child if he or she is not yet able to do this. Soon, we will be moving on to solving word problems within 10 and learning addition and subtraction strategies. In Science, we completed weather and precipitation. The students made weather vanes in the Science Lab today, which they seemed to love. We are now learning about where we live in Social Studies. The students must learn their address, city, county, state, country and continent and be able to locate on a map. Please practice your address with your child at home. I have been assessing them in class to determine if they could state their entire address. In Language Arts, we are continuing to work on reading stamina and learning about the Daily 5 centers. We have reached 20 minutes of reading stamina for Read to Self, but we are still working on reading stamina for Read to Someone. We need to master that and work on writing stamina as well. We have begun to learn about the Word Work centers and how to complete them. Soon, we will move into retelling, including characters, setting and major events and distinguishing between fiction and non-fiction. We are going to try to begin talking about narrative writing this week. The students will be visiting the Lightbulb Lab on Friday.

Homework

Just some reminders about homework. First, the students can choose a minimum of 16 activities on the math page. They can complete the problems on the page or use the addition "Math Work" page provided. That is just meant for extra writing space if they want to use it. Second, the students should choose a spelling activity each night and complete on the page provided. The spelling words are at the top of the math page, and they are also on the blog. Third, they should complete the reading log each night. They are really doing a great job with homework! If you have any questions or concerns, just let me know.

Behavior
Please continue to talk to your children about expected behaviors at school. We are continuing to discuss rules and procedures each day, and many are continuing to struggle to follow rules and procedures and control talking. There is so much to learn in First Grade. I want the students to have fun along the way, but we really need to focus on our learning. I want them to understand how important it is to take responsibility for their learning and behavior, and that learning is disrupted when behavior is an issue. I only want them to feel success, learn and continue to grow.

CogAT
Next week will be the CogAt testing on September 6, 7 and 8. Please have your children to school on time as the testing begins at 8:00. Also, please be sure they get a good night's rest, a good breakfast and send in a healthy snack! :)

Progress Reports
Progress reports will be sent home next week. Progress reports are based on what we have been able to assess in the classroom so far. Of course, we are unable to provide information on standards we have not yet taught. I will keep in touch regarding any struggles your student may be having. If you ever have any questions or concerns, just let me know.

Wishlist
If you have any toys or things you would like to get rid of that would be great for our treasure box, please send our way!

Please just let me know if you ever have any questions.

Ending Week 2! Beginning Week 3!

First, thank you to all of you who were able to make it to Open House. It was wonderful to have the opportunity to see everyone. The first two weeks have been filled with rules, procedures and getting to know each other! We had the opportunity to have Learning Commons orientation, the students met the new Guidance Counselor, Mrs. Waite, and we had Lightbulb Lab on Friday! This coming week brings a visit to the Science lab, another visit to the Learning Commons and Lightbulb Lab!

In Writing, we will begin working on narrative writing. In Language Arts, the students will be introduced to Daily 5, and we will be working on our Read to Self stamina and choosing "just right" books. In First Grade, we really work on developing independence and reading stamina, which is a work in progress. In phonics, we will be practicing with "l" blends. In Science, we will begin learning about weather, weather instruments and types of precipitation. In Math, we will begin our unit on representing numbers, collecting data and graphing data.
